Boating in Ohio
When we say Ohio is great for boaters, we mean it! In fact
boating in Ohio is so popular that the state has recently
committed over four million dollars toward expanding and
improving boating access at thirty different sites all over the
state. You may be surprised at how many places there are where
you can enjoy boating in Ohio. Here are a few of the most
popular destinations:
Lake
Erie – one of the most beautiful of the
Great Lakes, Lake Erie has 150 miles of freshwater coastline
and has long been a popular boating destination as well as a
great place to fish. In fact, this area of Ohio is often called
“the Walleye Capital of the World,” although you can also find
yellow perch, steelhead trout and smallmouth bass. Fishing is
productive year-round, and there are many boat ramps to get
onto the water, as well as many beautiful islands to visit on
your boating trip:
- Middle Bass Island
- South Bass Island
- Kelleys Island
The Ohio
River – located in the southern part of the
state, this river forms the entire 451-mile southern boundary
of Ohio, and also has multiple places to launch your boat. If

Muskinghum River
Parkway – the Muskingum River's 10
hand-operated locks are recognized as one of America's great
engineering accomplishments, having been designated a National
Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of
Civil Engineers in July 2001. The Muskinghum River Parkway
provide picnic grounds, campsites, and excellent fishing. Boats
which travel the river include:
- boats with unlimited horsepower motors
- house boats
- pontoon boats
- canoes
- rowboats
Buckeye
Lake – is Ohio's oldest state park.
Boasting 3,300 acres of beautiful water, Buckeye Lake offers
numerous water-related recreational opportunities including
swimming, skiing, boating and fishing. While they have no limit
on the amount of horsepower on this lake, you will also find
pontoons, sailboats, canoes and rowboats enjoying the water.
Several public launch ramps provide access to the lake.
There are also numerous other lakes for boating in Ohio as
well as many national parks with some great scenery. Fishing
abounds in Ohio with some prized bass being caught on a regular
basis. Boat fishing is especially great in Ohio with some
excellent shoreline home to catfish as well as carp.
